Breed-program: Burmese

Firstly, it’s necessary to represent the breed of Burmese, because for the other represented in the project breeds Burmese was the basis for their creation.

The registration of Burmese in felinological organizations, which are the members of WCC (World Cat Congress), is presented in the table.

As it was already mentioned in the part “Standards”, the American felinological organization CFA (Cat Fanciers’ Association) has Burmese and European Burmese standards.
These are 2 different breeds, which, according to the rules of the organization, cannot be bred between themselves. In the present case it concerns 2 different breeds in the network of one organization. They have different breed coding, which is given after registration and is written down in the pedigree.
European Burmese has 1500-1501 registration code in CFA.
Burmese has 1400(0400) – 1405(0405) registration code.
It depends on animal colour and sex (male cats have even numbers, female cats – uneven numbers).

To register their cats in CFA, breeders should present the pedigree with the ancestors of only one breed.
For European Burmese and Burmese these are 8 generations.
Burmese was given the official status CFA in 1936.
European Burmese was given this status comparatively recently in 2002.

* Special attention should be given to the question of the breeding between animals of one breed – Burmese, having different phenotype.
From the history of the breed it’s clearly seen, that its formation and development were in different times, on different continents, on different programs of felinological systems. Many differences in Burmese look were formed historically, others are conditionally defined by the breeders.

It’s evidently, that the standards of American, European and Australian systems describe different Burmese. Nevertheless, it’s one breed, which has different types inside the breed, formed at different breed lines.

Blood mixing with the other breed lines, different by look, but presenting one breed was always happening. It was specified by a breeder’s wish to get an animal of specific type in the catteries.
15 years ago in the network of WCF system the breeders actively began to breed the animals, which represented the breed of Burmese on the territory of Europe at that time, with the animals, imported from the USA and having the type, described by the American standards. It’s incorrectly to call these animals mix Burmese, because they don’t have any other ancestors except Burmeses.
Everything is simple: they bred Burmese and got Burmese.

There is no breed “mix” and no such a standard in any felinological system. The breeders independently select animals for breeding in their catteries and register kittens as Burmese in any felinological system on their choice.
